Sam Raimi Says World of Warcraft Movie Will Be Original
If you've never heard of World of Warcraft, then you're probably living in a deserted cave, underneath a rock, and without an internet connection (in fact, how are you reading this?). WoW holds the Guinness World Record as the most popular MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game), with approximately 11.5 million monthly subscribers. Because of its popularity, it's no wonder that WoW is soon headed to the big screen.
Director Sam Raimi, famous for his Evil Dead and Spider-Man films, is currently in pre-production on the WoW movie. He told MTV that rumors about the film being based on the Arthas: Rise of the Lich King novel are false.
We would choose ... something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it. But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters.
Raimi said that an original script is being written by Robert Rodat, whose script for Saving Private Ryan earned him an Oscar nomination.
We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a World of WarCraft adventure. Only obviously it's very different 'cause it's expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture.
