World of Warcraft "Echoes of Doom" patch goes awry, mounts and pets disappear
Jordan Golson -10.16.2008

On Tuesday, Blizzard rolled out the latest patch for its popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft, but early problems have crippled some gameplay. The update, titled "Echoes of Doom", was built to prep players and the game world for the November release of the "Wrath of the Lich King" expansion.

After installing the patch, many players lost access to their "mounts" and "pets" in-game. In World of Warcraft, higher-level players (of which the vast majority of subscribers are) can purchase mounts like horses that allow them to travel or fly around the game world quickly. These mounts are needed to access high-level content within the game but when the patch was updated, many players lost the ability to access their mounts, preventing them from accessing routine elements of the game.

One of the numerous threads about the problem on the World of Warcraft game forums has more than 800 responses from angry and frustrated players pleading with Blizzard to restore access. The thread was locked yesterday at 6PM Pacific time, and players were warned that any further posts on the topic would be deleted.

A player I spoke to, "Yorface" on the Deathwing server, told me that his server was one of the last to come back online after the patch -- and he experienced "tremendous lag" on the server as he logged in, presumably a result of thousands of players trying to log in at once. Everything was fine for about 15 minutes, until he was kicked offline after a World Server Disconnect -- a generic error message that kicks many players off the game.

When he logged back in, he was "mountless." He submitted a Game Master service ticket through the in-game help system, but didn't hear from Blizzard for 24 hours and the advice that the GM gave him to fix the issues didn't fix his problem. He's still waiting, two days later, for his mounts to be restored.

I've contacted Blizzard for more information on what's happened and an ETA for a fix, but they have not responded as of yet.

From what i saw the main problem was multiple resets on the servers to try to thresh out those very latency problems people were experience. The problem was reseting back to an earlier save of the item database could possibly loose mounts they had "learned" into their spell book, and with no item in the bag. That would end up w/ the item supposedly learned but not visible & in their bags
